Here we are full ride day #2. It started off a very neat morning. We stepped out of the Matewan House Bed and Breakfast to see fog up in the mountain hollers. Everyone was ready and we took off. Next thing we know we are riding through fog off and on. It was a very memorable experience I will always remember.
Today we are set to go from Matewan to Williamson. We had several miles worth of trails planned with one of our stops being Mushroom rock. We were all going to go up and take a group photo again. Tammy decided to follow me and was having a little trouble making it up. She said I don’t know if I will make it. I said sure you will and then she tumbles down the side of the rock ledge. She was wearing coveralls looking like that kid on the Christmas story. She scared the crap out of me flipping directly on her back. She popped right back up thankfully like nothing happened at all. This time I gave her a helping hand knowing she COULD NOT MAKE IT! Leaving the area I found a Teenage Mutant Ninja Rock that someone had hid, very cool. I snatched it up to relocate it.
We were off to put some more miles in seeing all kinds of views being here in the pinnacle of fall colors. We saw a cat that went into a coal mine grill that they were trying to call “KittY KittY” come here, I will take you home!. That cat was gone, “Smart Cat”.
Our next stop Castle Rock, one of my more favorite places when I do this ride. James, Michael, Pam and myself went up in the castle. Pam got scared and ended up holding back and not going through the cave overhang. Myself, James, and Michael crawled right through the hole. We re-hid the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and took our pictures, climbed back through the hole and played up on some more rocks.
Off, we go with our next stop planning to be the Almost Heaven Swing. We get up their take our turns swinging and looking off the mountain side. While everyone was playing around, I spotted an old trail and walked it, while walking I saw a leaf smiling back at me. Can you find it in the set of pictures? Anyways, it was time to leave, and I told everyone to wait while I tried this old trail. Well, watch the video you are in for a treat. I misjudged a spot, and my machine was too wide to fit. We rode up the tree and came back down hard as hell. I hit my elbow on the side of the door and pulled something and could barely use my arm for days after. What an embarrassing situation. I squeezed through it using my winch and was going to drive some more but it felt like I was stuck on something so Michael, came up and helped me winch the rest of the way up. Once I took off, I realized It hit so hard on that tree that my power steering protection kicked on and shut it down. I probably could had made it without winching had a realized. Oh well I’ll try again next time we go.
We have a great time eating in Willimson at Five Guys Pizza, then head back to Matewan via a backroad which was pretty darn cool. I decide to stop at the Matewan House before seeing if anyone wanted to hit up the outlaws in Kentucky. Next thing I know though is the owners baked some awesome brownies or apple turnovers or something and they were all inhaling them. To my surprise everyone’s like yah we will go to the outlaws!
Off we went to the outlaws. It was more opened up in Kentucky and Beautiful. Just awesome, really. You could see for miles and the colors of the leaves were just jaw dropping everywhere. We went up some nice hills and had a good time and got to see Bald Knob. I had it planned to come out on different trails then we went in on and decided it was time to go to ensure we got back before dark. We were off and doing some more climbs on side trails here and there and had no issue getting out. If I go there again I will probably just go in that way as it was a lot quicker. But hey who is in a hurry!
We get back and learn that Its Tricker Treating time in Matewan. They delayed it a day or something because of the weather. Michael and Holly set out in front of the Bed and Breakfast handing out candy. In Matewan it’s like being in the middle of nowhere, I was shocked seeing all the kids coming out from all the hollers around, there were tons of them. It was very awesome!
Everyone being tired was either relaxing in the Living rooms or going to bed. Not I Dave and Brenda said, we are walking to the Bar. Pam and I went with them and had a grand ole time. When we got back there wasn’t a creature a stirring, not even a mouse! Then I remembered putting some quarters on the railroad track out back and we had to go get them. Smashed like a pancake. Always a good time in West Virginia!
