I was fortunate enough a long time ago to be able to ride what we called Slade with a local named Curtis. It was very fun back then and it was always rare to pass others. For a long time, they tried to open a park and then finally one day Boneyard arrived while they were still trying to open the main park. Fortunately, it was merged into Hollerwood once Hollerwood did open.
I always enjoyed running the outlaws and going to the overlook and several places. Unfortunately, on this trip the normal way to the overlook is closed off and several of the outlaw trails are no more. I was able to see some stuff of the past as reflected in the pictures and still had a very enjoyable time.
My friend Leon Booth and myself had discovered several caves in the area that aren’t really known by people and I was happy to be able to find one of them this time around. On top of walking through it there is nothing like the natural air condition of a reel cave to take a break from the heat of the day. Thanks, Leon for showing me that cave everyone swore the location to secrecy and enjoyed it.
I did get to venture off to the Tunnel which is outside of Hollerwood. We did go over a very sketchy spot with a video below. If it was any skinnier you couldn’t make it. You can take the creek around it we learned but we were already up there so i said why not. The look on Casey and Joe’s face afterwords was priceless. Who’s next? It’s looking the best I have seen it I am guessing with the lack of people visiting it in these days with all the respectable off-road people visiting it. At least that is wishful thinking it’s probably more so because of the lack of the good trails that were once out that way being gone. Now it’s just a long venture to see the one spot.
I did get to go veer off Hollerwood and visit the Overhang and go under the bridge its always been a favorite of mine since I originally seen it. This area of Eastern Kentucky is really breathtaking.
I always travel over to Harmon Hills to visit stump cave as a stop. There has always been a spot thats hard to pass but never this hard. Everyone in the group had to winch and I believe for James Couch it was his first time having to really use his winch to get out of a situation. Technically I guess no one used their winch except for me as i just clicked into their winch on the front of their machines. So I guess its a good thing he had a winch for a winch point, :).
I am also glad we got to see Townsend Cave. We didn’t see a soul! I had heard its disputed property even though looking at GIS data I don’t see why. Nevertheless, with things disappearing I am glad I got to see it again and share the environment with the group.
I always like Hollerwood because there are several portions that have nice technical trails but not non-stop. You can be on a trail and say to yourself this is a nice easy trail and then all of a sudden, all hell breaks out!
Memories were made and a great time were had by everyone in attendance. There is no other place I would have rather been this day!
